Digital Design and World Building for Narrative Media
A 3-part discussion into design as the backbone of digital narrative media, and to address the changing role of the designer in storytelling through Worldbuilding practices.
With this first in a series Worldbuilding Summit, the 5D | Institute and the USC School of Cinematic Arts will use their unique access to frame an investigation into the language and practices of digital design methodologies, applying learning from thought leaders in core media industries to an interdisciplinary discussion space within and across media.
Worldbuilding is the new metaphor for the creation and actualizing of the story space in narrative media and will be the theme of the Summit. It addresses narrative design thinking, the immersive process and the experience of creating new worlds. It expresses the full arc of the role of design in Storytelling.

World Premier of Lou Reed's
Ambisonic 3D Sound Installation
5D Founder and UAM Director, Chris Scoates is proud to present
Lou Reed's Metal Machine Trio: Creation of the Universe
at the UAM from January 27–April 15, 2012
In 1975 RCA Records originally released Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music as a double
album. It was seen as a radical departure from previous Reed recordings of the time as
it had no songs or even recognizably structured compositions. Metal Machine Music is now
seen, in retrospect, as a ground breaking foray into industrial music and sound art.
Metal Machine Trio, a 2009 live performance with John Zorn at the Blender Theatre in New
York, was recorded by the sound engineers at Arup Engineering.
The University Art Museum, CSULB will present the world premiere audio installation of
Metal Machine Trio as an ambisonic 3-D re-creation. In collaboration with the acoustic
specialists at the Arup Engineering SoundLab in New York, Reed has been able to
recreate, for museum visitors, this ground breaking composition from exactly the same
acoustic perspective he had while performing it on stage.
Exhibition open in the UAM Project Room from January 27–April 15, 2012
University Art Museum, California State University, Long Beach
