USC Cinematic Arts

Dr. Beth Coleman is an artist and research. She is the director City as Platform Lab, Games Institute, co-director of the Critical Media Lab, and faculty in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. Coleman works with new technology and art to create transmedia forms of public, civic, and poetic engagement. She is the co-founder of SoundLab Cultural Alchemy, an internationally acclaimed multimedia art and sound platform. As an artist, she has a history of international exhibition including venues such as the Whitney Museum of American Art, New Museum of Contemporary Art, and Musée d'Art moderne Paris. Before joining the UW faculty, Coleman held the position of assistant professor of Comparative Media Studies, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she has worked with research consortiums that involved academic, industry and arts collaborators. Her book Hello Avatar is published by the MIT Press.
